  • Thank you to everyone who came to our Annual Meeting and Presentation evening on 30th November. It was really great to see so many people from the Shadwell community there to support the event, there were 118 people who attended! Part of the evening was a celebration of all the achievements of the youth club members over the past year, including award presentations. The six winners of the Jack Petchey Achievement Awards were recognised and received their certificates and medallions. These awards are voted on by the young people and recognise all kinds of achievements, from supporting others on their journey, to succeeding in personal challenges. Trophies and medals were also presented to the winners from the annual Shadwell Youth Challenge. This event has been running since 2001 and gives many young people their first taste of competition. There are three age categories for males and females in each of the competitions: kayak sprint, slalom, distance and speed climbing. This year there were over 90 competitors taking part and it was wonderful to see so many of them receive their awards. Thank you to Niamh from SRC Infrastructure who presented the awards. Members of the Adventure Coach Training Scheme were applauded for their achievements in gaining Royal Yachting Association Dinghy Instructor awards and British Canoeing Paddlesport Instructor awards. These young coaches have already started their journey in passing on their skills and we are very happy to welcome them to the staff team. To finish off the evening a film of the activities throughout the year was shown and this will be available on our Youtube channel shortly. If you couldn’t make it this year, please do look out for the notice of next year’s meeting and come along to join us.

  • Thank you to all the amazing team at SRC, who undertook a fundraising challenge and rowed a marathon distance on the River Thames this week. The team raised £4,000 towards the costs of providing activities for young people and saw the river from a completely new angle. The row from Shadwell to Chiswick and back (26 miles) passes so many iconic London landmarks, including Tower Bridge, the London Eye and the Palace of Westminster. The timing was perfect, as Tower Bridge was raised as we approached and then Big Ben rang out just as we reached Westminster. Arrival at Chiswick brought a much needed break for lunch before the return journey back through town. Events like this are an important part of the Centre’s fundraising efforts and we really appreciate all the hard work that individuals and companies such as SRC put in to help us reach our targets. Thank you all so much!

  • We were blown away by the recent support of one of our local businesses, the Town of Ramsgate Pub, who organised a fantastic fundraising evening to help the Centre. The event was sponsored by The Wine Place, Jeroboams Wine Merchants, Ed J Bucknall Art, Charlie’s Music, Gusbourne, Jensen’s Gin and John Dawson Photography. Attendees enjoyed a delicious four course dinner, paired with wonderful wines and there was a charity auction, with proceeds and donations helping to support the Centre. Thank you to all the organisers, sponsors and attendees, your generosity and support means the world to the Centre!

  • Thank you to our funders, staff and to all of the young people who attended for making our Summer Project such an amazing programme, full of fun, learning, laughter and achievement. We’ll be putting up a full report soon!

  • Over the last couple of years companies, parents, adult club members and friends of the Centre have undertaken rowing challenges on the River Thames to help in our fundraising efforts to maintain and grow the Centre’s youth provision and we are incredibly grateful for all the efforts of those who have taken part. These challenges help us to buy new equipment and subsidise our charges to young people. A weekly £4 youth club place costs the Centre approximately £18 in real terms when operating costs are taken into account. Examples of the costs of replacing equipment such as buoyancy aids and kayaks can be seen here on our giving page. Be part of the Challenge Team for 2024! Looking for a challenge in 2024? Join us on one of our fundraising events, or get together with colleagues to plan your own challenge. Please drop us an email to info@shadwell-basin.org.uk if you’re interested in any of the events below, or have ideas for your own event. Plans for 2024 include: Thames Barrier Challenge Row from Shadwell past Greenwich and the O2 Dome, before going through the Thames Flood Barrier and returning after a well deserved lunch on this 14 mile challenge. River Thames Marathon Row 26.2 miles on the Thames, from Tower Bridge to Chiswick and back, on this marathon day out! See all the sights of London from the water and stop for lunch at the historic Ship Inn, famous for being on the finish line of the Oxford & Cambridge Boat Race. Join the team for the Great River Race This annual race on the Thames for traditional craft attracts teams from all over the world. Over 300 teams usually take part in the 21.6 mile race, making the event a fantastic spectacle on the river every year. The race takes place in September and the course goes from Millwall in the east across to Richmond in the west, travelling past famous London bridges and landmarks. We will be entering teams in the race once again in 2024, so come and be part of this amazing event.
