Kilimanjaro Youth Challenge 2020

Shadwell Basin Outdoor Activity Centre is taking a group of young people between the ages of 16 to 18 years on a life changing journey to Tanzania to Climb Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest mountain. At 5,895 metres it is also the highest free standing mountain in the world.

Update – May 2020

We wanted to let you all know that due to the current Covid 19 situation we have taken the difficult decision to postpone our expedition to Tanzania until 2021.  We are very disappointed to have to do this, but the safety and wellbeing of the team and the communities that they will be working with in Tanzania has been foremost in our decision making. All of the team members are still working behind the scenes on fundraising and preparation and are determined to make the expedition and community project a success.

We would like to thank everyone who has supported the expedition so far and ask for your understanding about the postponement.  We look forward to letting you know about the updated plans in the future and know that this delay will strengthen the resolve of the young people to succeed in their aims.

Forward to Tanzania 2021 – we can, we try, we succeed!

The plan for the expedition

Whilst in Tanzania the ten young people from East London will work on a community project with street children, with a charity which takes young people with no families from the street giving them opportunities to make better lives.

To achieve our goals we need to raise £35,000 to cover the three week expedition and the community project. As part of this the members have to individually raise £1,000, with group challenges to raise the rest and applications to grant giving bodies.

All the members have been involved in the planning and organisation, which has so far lasted a year. This expedition will be a huge challenge that will push the young people to their limits, testing their courage, endurance, and mental strength while giving them important life skills and learning of teamwork, leadership, communication and decision making under extreme circumstances.

As a whole the impact on their lives will be a positive towards them becoming young global citizens with a true understanding of the wider world, whilst forming life-long friendships across cultural divides.

Each one of the young people also has their own page on Virgin Money Giving, if you would like to sponsor an individual.
